Delivering high quality mixed-age provision for babies: Learning from Holbourn House Day Nursery
We were recently interviewed for a blog piece by The Baby Room, an organisation that has been funded by the Nuffield Foundation to conduct research into Achieving high-quality provision in the baby room of English nurseries.
This project brings together evidence on what quality provision looks like in the baby rooms (for children aged 0-2 years) of English nurseries and we at Holbourn House provided an alternative viewpoint: that segregation by age is just one way to provide early years education - there is another way.
At Holbourn House, children of all ages mix together across our free flow spaces, encouraging babies to learn from older children and vice-versa. It's a fairly unique approach in the UK, but one that advocates for inclusivity and diversity regardless of age or stage.
